Dahlias are San Francisco’s official City Flower. My own experience with growing them was quite successful, and you can eat the tubers when they’re done for the year!

Just wanted to give a heads up about a plant-related event happening tomorrow, since Yours Truly will be speaking briefly and introducing the keynote speaker!

Free Event – Dahlia Talk: Sunday, June 26, 2011: 11am – 1pm, at Flora Grubb Gardens (click to see the posting on Flora Grubb Gardens’ Events page.)

At Flora Grubb Gardens I will be introducing master Dahlia grower Mike Schelp, who grows them for the nursery on his farm in Half Moon Bay. Dahlias provide so much delicate texture and summer color. They mix so well with a variety of other plants in the garden, including succulents and Mediterranean Climate plantings. They are a favorite in bouquets, and Mike will teach tricks to growing florist-quality Dahlias on your own. The nursery has just stocked up on a great selection of Dahlia cultivars, and Mike is bringing a prime selection to sell after the talk.
